French antique banquet table service, monogram: wg

French antique banquet table service, monogram: wg

A pristine and extremely refined banquet table service loomed of a very fine, silky and superb quality of pure white "fil de lin" linen. The fabric is at the same time very tightly woven and sturdy while on the other hand being delicate and light as a feather - I would almost venture to say that it is a linen baptiste. This lovely set is comprised of a grand tablecloth and twelve large matching napkins all bearing a beautiful and meticulously embroidered monogram "WG." With understated elegance the tablecloth is decorated with two damask friezes, an inner one measuring four inches in width which creates a frame on the table surface, and a wide outer band measuring eight inches in width which outlines the border, each decorated with a motif of arabesques in the damask which separates beautifully. Two monograms are situated in the center of the cloth in opposition to each other. The napkins similarly are decorated with a single damask band and are each monogrammed in one corner. This stunning ensemble is in excellent condition and I would venture to say that it was little used, if used at all! The only flaw of note is that two napkins had tiny pinponts of rust after having lain in storage, which have been removed, but these left two small pinpricks in each of the two napkins. I've had these professionally darned to contain them, and truly they are so insignificant as to not in any way mar the appearance of the set. Mid 20th c. Dimensions: tablecloth 112 x 80.5in., napkins 36 x 29in.
