A superb and unusual 19th century handkerchief hand loomed of a diaphanous white linen batiste. A large monogram "VG" is entirely embroidered in small, perfect flowers in a relief of bourdon, the centers of which are filled with needlelace. The flower motif continues all along the border of the piece in four undulating rows of bourdon with bunches of flowers interspersed throughout. The edges are finished with an irregular scallop, and each crescent is itself very finely finished with miniscule scalloped embroidery. Some slight yellowing but otherwise impeccable condition. Dimensions: 16.5 x 15.5in.
