A spectacular pair of 19th century pillow shams loomed of some of the finest pure white and very silken "fil de lin" linen. These splendid shams each have an ornate monogram "HP" embroidered in one corner with miniscule and meticulous points of bourdon and post point. A tiny hemstitch runs along the edges and a simply breathtaking border, scalloped and embroidered throughout with abundant flowers and vines, frames each piece. These shams display a rare finesse both in their materials and in the expertise of their craftsmanship that is no less than museum quality! Both shams close at the back with six buttons but one has tiny mother-of-pearl buttons and the other has tiny linen-covered buttons. Early to mid 19th century. Of Note: one sham has a single, small and well executed darn in the embroidered edge which is practically invisible as it blends with the embroidery. The other sham has a very fine repair along the tiny hemstitch which measures about an inch to an inch and a half and is equally invisible (visible in third to last photo). Dimensions: interior 28.5 x 27in., exterior 33.5 x 32in.
